Renovating While Living In It vs Moving Out — How to Decide

Planning Your Renovation

It's the question almost every client asks before signing a contract: do we stay, or do we go? There's no universally right answer, but there is a right answer for your specific project.

Can you live in your home during a renovation?

You can live in your home during a renovation when the work is contained to one or two rooms and you keep a working bathroom and kitchen. For a whole-home renovation, moving out is almost always the better choice: trades get full access, the build runs faster and smoother, and your family isn't living on a building site.

Complete Homes is a family-owned Gold Coast renovation business, operating since 1985 and run by Fouad and his father William. We help Gold Coast families make this call on every job, from single bathrooms to whole-home renovations on the Gold Coast.

Before budget, before materials, the decision that shapes your whole renovation experience is whether you live through it or move out. Get this one right and the project feels manageable. Get it wrong and even a well-run renovation can feel chaotic.

Living in your home during renovation vs moving out: how do they compare?

🏠 Living in it
  • No rental costs
  • You're on hand for decisions and site visits
  • Slower build, as trades work around your routine
  • Dust, noise and disruption to daily life
  • Limited kitchen and bathroom access during key phases
  • Best for single-room projects
📦 Moving out
  • Rental or family-stay costs for the build period
  • Faster, more efficient build, as trades have full access
  • No disruption to work, school or family routine
  • Better outcome for full or near-full renovations
  • Easier for trades to work on several rooms at once
  • Spares you the stress of living in a worksite

What's the real question to ask yourself?

It's not "can I tolerate some mess". Most people can, for a short time. It's: which rooms are out of action, and for how long? A renovation that removes your only bathroom or your kitchen for more than a couple of weeks changes the equation, however resilient your family is.

What do we suggest for common renovation scenarios?

🛁
Single bathroom renovation, you have another bathroom Stay. The work is contained to one room and you keep full use of the rest of the house. A single bathroom renovation typically takes 3–5 weeks to build.
🍳
Kitchen renovation, no temporary kitchen setup Consider a short-term move, or set up a temporary kitchen zone in another room if staying matters to you. Several weeks without a working kitchen is hard going with a family.
👶
Young children or babies in the home Lean toward moving out for anything beyond a single contained room. Dust, noise and tradespeople moving through the home every day are harder to manage with little ones underfoot.
🏗️
Full home or near-full renovation Move out. Several trades need access across the whole home at the same time, and the build runs faster and smoother without working around a family living on site.
🐾
Pets in the home Factor this in whatever you decide. Open doors, power tools and unfamiliar tradespeople are stressful and risky for pets, so arrange care or a secure zone either way.

Our whole-home renovations in Robina, Arundel, Carrara and Lower Beechmont were each delivered as one complete renovation. In Gaven, two bathrooms and a laundry were renovated together as one job, which kept the disruption to a single period.

How long will you need to move out for?

A whole-home renovation typically takes 12 to 24 weeks to build, so that is the period to plan accommodation around. Our whole-home renovation week-by-week guide shows what happens in each stage.

Start planning 3 to 6 months ahead. That gives you time to book a rental, line up school and work routines, and lock in your preferred start date. If your plans need council or certifier approval, have it finalised before you contact a builder, and allow around 4–8 weeks for it.

On the Gold Coast, summer storms can pause outdoor and roofing work, so build some slack into your rental dates. In Queensland, residential building work over $3,300 must be done by a QBCC-licensed contractor and is covered by QBCC home warranty insurance. If you're weighing up rental costs against the renovation itself, our Gold Coast renovation cost estimator gives you a starting budget.

How do you make living through a renovation easier?

  • Set up a temporary zone for whatever room is out of action, such as a temporary kitchen station or a second bathroom you keep working
  • Seal off work areas with plastic sheeting and ask your builder about dust control. This matters more than most people expect
  • Agree on site hours upfront so you know when to expect noise and activity each day
  • Plan a few nights away during the noisiest phases, usually demolition and any structural work
A practical middle ground

Some clients stay for the early and late phases but move out from demolition through to lock-up. This avoids the worst of the disruption while keeping the time away from home shorter.

"The right answer isn't about toughing it out. It's about which option lets your family keep living normally."

Planning tip

Whichever you choose, discuss it with your builder before the schedule is finalised. Knowing upfront whether the home will be occupied or vacant changes how trades sequence the work, and can affect both the timeline and the quote.

Living in your home during renovation: FAQs

Can you live in your house during a renovation?

Yes, if the work is limited to one or two rooms and you still have a working bathroom and kitchen. For a whole-home renovation it is usually better to move out. Trades get full access, the build runs faster and smoother, and your family avoids months of dust, noise and disruption.

How long does a whole-home renovation take on the Gold Coast?

A whole-home renovation on the Gold Coast typically takes 12 to 24 weeks to build, after around 4 to 8 weeks of design and quoting. Plan your accommodation around the build period, and leave some slack in your rental dates in case summer storms pause outdoor or roofing work.

Is it cheaper to stay in your home during a renovation?

Staying saves on rent, but it usually makes the build slower, because trades have to work around your routine and keep parts of the house usable. For a whole-home renovation, the smoother program and less disruption to family life generally make moving out the better choice.

When should you start planning a renovation?

Start planning 3 to 6 months before you want work to begin. That gives you time to finalise the design, have any council or certifier approvals in place before you contact a builder, book a rental if you are moving out, and lock in your preferred start date.

What should you do with pets during a renovation?

Arrange care or a secure area for pets whether you stay or move out. Open doors, power tools, dust and unfamiliar tradespeople are stressful and risky for animals. A friend's place, a boarding kennel or a closed-off room away from the work all reduce the risk of escape or injury.

Not sure which approach is right for your renovation?

We'll talk through your project, household and timeline, and give you an honest recommendation either way.
